One underlying theme that extends to all of Dr. Gunness’ leadership roles: granting healthcare access to underserved patients and communities. It all started when he served as an HIV coordinator for [insert organization name here], providing said access to HIV-positive patients during a time when healthcare institutions were still learning about the functions/dynamics of difficult-to-reach populations. In subsequent years, he oversaw a multi-site research demonstration project at one of the largest HIV clinics in the country: developing a clinic resource center, establishing the first consumer advisory board, and joining a team that provided comprehensive, high-quality healthcare services.
Dr. Gunness later refined his skill set as a public health hospital representative, providing technical assistance to over 30 New York State hospitals. Aligning with the populations he’s served, his doctoral dissertation centered on healthcare access among homeless gay/bisexual young men in NYC.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gunness has worked to develop a critical lens for systematic processes and barriers to healthcare as well as innovative and evidence-based solutions contributing to healthcare institution success.

Examples of his work in this regard include measuring the throughput of patients diagnosed with a highly infectious disease and the length of time it takes to access healthcare. He has also closely collaborated with NYCDOHMH in the midst of emerging disease outbreaks and mentored/trained public health interns and practitioners to evaluate value-based care, patient satisfaction, web-based referral systems, population health intervention, etc.

Dr. Gunness had absolutely no filmmaking experience prior to self-producing his documentary. However, having worked in the public health and healthcare space for many years, he possessed a keen eye for capturing hidden community nuances not often observable in social media: those that impede patient access to healthcare and breed catastrophic health outcomes.
After witnessing the disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Gunness felt compelled to unearth the factors leading to them via a documentary and thus, educate audiences while supporting communities with additional resources.
Dr. Gunness continues to champion such efforts, shining a spotlight on nuances that negatively impact public health in urban communities.

As a native New Yorker hailing from a working-class immigrant community, networking initially seemed daunting for Dr. Gunness—especially with various personality traits (e.g., ethnic identity, sexual minority issues, and various insecurities) challenging his professional development.
Lacking the privilege of belonging to a wealthy, educated family with habitual access to resources and services while growing up, he was forced to figure it out on his own while leaning on professors and mentors for help; this is one crucial reason why Dr. Gunness believes professional networking is so critical to one’s growth and leadership in the industry.
Networking can in fact mean many things to many people—whether they’re looking to secure a job, move up the career ladder, engage in informational interviews, collaborate on a project, or seek out a referral—and ultimately enabled Dr. Gunness to learn, grow, forge lasting friendships, and create opportunities beyond his wildest imagination.

Dr. Gunness is impassioned to inspire leadership in others. Though his own personal journey toward success was fraught with uncharacteristic challenges beyond the status quo, he had the wisdom to transform those trials and tribulations into solutions. When engaging in motivational speaking gigs, Dr. Gunness draws from real-life experiences and lessons learned to capture the hearts of his audience; this includes his experience growing from humble upbringings in South Queens, NY and climbing his way to success as a senior health officer and member of the board of trustees with the US Public Health Service. Dr. Gunness also enjoys motivational speaking forums where he can uplift the audience and guide them toward a fruitful future.

As people age, the cost of caregiving continues to increase, placing unexpected financial burden on families. The American Psychological Association shows that caregiving for elderly adults can place a major mental and physical toll on family caregivers, particularly for dementia and end-of-life (respite) care. Frequent physical and emotional exhaustion, neglected personal health, lost family and personal time, marital strife, work interruptions, and growing financial difficulties are some of the major stressors.
Following the success of his award-winning documentary and drawing from his 25-years experience as a public health expert, Dr. Gunness will now aim at producing a docu-series addressing elder care and other public health issues affecting us today. He seeks to provide a clearer understanding of the many challenges caregivers (of different racial and socioeconomic background) face and explore the proven solutions to help them be more informed caregivers as well as those serving the community.
Dr. Gunness will partner with the award-winning filmmaker, Pierre Guillet, a writer, producer, and director on many shorts, commercials, and music videos. In 2023, his documentary, “The Book of Harth”, won best feature at several film festivals. Together, their hope is to revolutionize the way documentaries are done to be more informative and solution based.
1. To assess the factors (such as barriers and solutions) of elder caregiving as experienced by caregivers, medical professionals, estate planning attorneys, financial experts, and community leaders from different socioeconomic communities;
2.To increase awareness of these factors via the caregiving community, universities, legal services, healthcare institutions, and government agencies;
We are asking for your donation for the pre-production of the docu-series. The pre-production will help to plan, research, and scout for caregivers/professionals to be interviewed, conduct initial interviews, travel, filming, develop/edit a trailer (sizzle), apply for grants, and licensing fees. Donors will get free access to see the documentary. Thank you in advance for your support and trust in us. Best, Harlem & Pierre
The question of whether or not to vaccinate has become one of the most pressing and polarizing of our time. Yet despite the critical importance of this debate, little has been done to understand the many individual concerns that underlie a range of vastly differing perspectives on the vaccine.
Bring it to the People introduces a unique and uncharacteristic perspective on the Covid-19 vaccination dilemma: Drawing from subject matter experts in the medical community and unconventional community leaders, the film underscores the complex issues that are preventing vaccination such as government mistrust, historical medical mistreatment, stigma, misunderstanding, health literacy, and misappropriation of resources. Taking a deep dive into multicultural communities of NYC that are not often represented in the media, the film taps into uncharted waters to understand polarizing perspectives on the vaccine, highlighting the medical ingenuity required to vaccinate some of the hardest-to-reach communities in NYC.
